Dr Klaus Schmidt-Hebbel, a Full Professor of Economics at Universidad del Desarrollo and Catholic University of Chile, is also an Associate Professor of Economics at the University of Chile. His Chilean peers elected him ‘2008 Economist of the Year’.
Klaus Schmidt-Hebbel is also a bestselling author who has published sixteen books and hundreds of scientific publications in international journals. His field of expertise includes international finance, macroeconomics, monetary policy, economic growth, and development. He also regularly contributes columns and op-ed pieces to newspaper and electronic media.
A board member of Banco BCI, the Reforestemos Foundation, the Commission of Institutionality and Philanthropy of Wilderness Areas, and Make-a-Wish Chile, Klaus Schmidt-Hebbel is also a former board member of AFP Habitat. He is a member of the National Council of Science, Technology, Knowledge, and Innovation for Development, the Advisory Council of the Chilean Foundation for the Pacific, and the Advisory Council of the Chilean Chapter of Transparency International.
Other positions held by Klaus Schmidt-Hebbel include Chief Economist of the Organisation of Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) and Director of the OECD Economics Department in Paris in 2008-2009. He was Chief of Economic Research at the Central Bank of Chile during the previous 12 years. Before that, he was Principal Economist in the Research Department of the World Bank in Washington. He has been Chairman of Chile’s Advisory Fiscal Council, Chairman of the Financial Advisory Board of Chile’s Sovereign Wealth Funds, General Director of Grupo Res Publica Chile, President of the Chilean Economic Association, and President of the Monetary Club.
As an advisor and consultant, Klaus Schmidt-Hebbel has collaborated with more than 85 international organisations, global and national corporations, governments, central banks, and universities. He has helped conduct research and provided key financial and policy advice on numerous topics. They include financial markets, macroeconomics and growth policies, pension systems, capital market reform, and policy design.
Regarding his educational background, Klaus Schmidt-Hebbel holds a Ph.D. in Economics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a BA and MA in Economics from the Catholic University of Chile.
As a conference speaker, Dr. Klaus Schmidt-Hebbel has been invited to speak at hundreds of international conferences and meetings of international corporations and academic organisations on financial, macroeconomic, and development issues. He lives in Chile and speaks Spanish, English, German, Portuguese, and basic French.
