Conference speaker Eugénie Le Sommer is a French football player for Club Olympique Lyonnais of the Division 1 Féminine. Although her position of choice is that of attacking midfielder, she often takes on on the position of second striker for the French women’s national football team.
Awarded the Bronze Ball for her 2008 performance at the FIFA U-20 World Cup, Eugénie Le Sommer made her first international debut at the EUFA Women’s Euro in 2009. A year later, she announced she would be joining Olympique Lyonnais, the four-time defending champions.
One of seven children, the game of football was part of her family tradition with her mother having played the sport during her youth. Eugénie Le Sommer started playing the game at age five. After four years playing for Trélissac FC, Eugénie Le Sommer started playing for FC Lorient. This period saw her earning numerous honours in the club youth section and helping them win a number of championships. Her performance saw her elected to attend CNFE Clairefontaine, the women’s section of the Clairefontaine Academy.
After a short stint at the academy, Eugénie Le Sommer joined the D1 Féminine club Stade Briochin. Her debut season with Saint-Brieuc saw her score four goals and appear in 22 league matches. The 2008 – 2009 season, however, saw her scoring 10 goals and nominated for the UNFP Female Player of the Year. The next season saw her score ten goals in her first seven league matches and awarded UNFP Female Player of the Year the following season.
Her international career saw Eugénie Le Sommer earn caps with the women’s under -17, under -18, and under -20 teams. She participated in two editions of the La Manga Cup, the 2007 UEFA Women’s Under -19 Championship as an underage player, and the 2008 UEFA Women’s Under -19 championship. She also played for the under -20 team at the FIFA U-20 Woman’s World Cup in 2008 that was held in Chile. This tournament saw Eugénie Le Sommer score four goals against Argentina. The subsequent match against Nigeria saw her score in the 49th minute to put both teams on an equal footing, with France winning the game with a late goal. She was awarded the Bronze Ball as the tournament’s third-best player.
The FIFA Women’s World Cup of 2015 saw Eugénie Le Sommer in the striker position, scoring for France’s 1-0 victory over England. She also scored two of France’s 3-0 victory goals over South Korea. In 2016, she played for France during the 2016 Olympic campaign where she scored one goal against Colombia and New Zealand respectively.
