    Pasi Sahlberg is a Finnish educator and author who has worked as a schoolteacher, teacher educator, researcher, and policy advisor in Finland and has studied education systems, analysed education policies, and advised education reforms around the world.

    He has written and spoken widely about these topics, his book ‘Finnish Lessons 2.0: What Can the World Learn from Educational Change in Finland‘ won the 2013 Grawemeyer Award for an idea that has potential to change the world. His belief in education reform on a global scale has seen him address some of the most prestigious universities as well as advise governments on education reform and policy improvement

    Pasi has held distinguished positions in educatory advisory roles that include: Senior Education specialist at the World Bank, a lead education expert at the European Training Foundation, Director General at Finland’s Ministry of Education, Visiting Professor of Practice at Harvard University’s Graduate School of Education, visiting scholar at Arizona State University and Professor of Education Policy at the Gonski Institute for Education, University of New South Wales Sydney.

    He has worked with more than fifty education systems on a global scale and advises the Finnish, Swedish, and Scottish governments on education reform and policies.

    Sahlberg has won many awards to present day including; the 2012 Education Award in Finland, the 2014 Robert Owen Award in Scotland, 2016 Lego Prize in Denmark, and the Rockefeller Foundation Bellagio Resident Fellowship in 2017.

    Commonly known as an international “school improvement activist”, Pasi is also a bestselling author. He has published numerous articles, chapters, and books on education. His recent books are ‘Hard Questions on Global Educational Change’, ‘Empowered Educators in Finland’ and ‘FinnishED Leadership: Four Big, Inexpensive Ideas to Transform Education

    His most recent books include “Let the Children Play: How more play will save our schools and help children thrive” (2019, with William Doyle), “Finnish Lessons 3.0: What Can the World Learn from Educational Change in Finland” (2021), and “In Teachers We Trust: The Finnish way to world-class schools” (2021, with Tim Walker). He is Professor of Education Policy at the University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia.

    Pasi Sahlberg earned his Ph.D. at the University of Jyväskylä, Finland, in 1996 and is an international speaker. Amongst his speaking engagements, he includes Stanford University, Columbia University, George Washington University, University of Chicago, and Vanderbilt University. He has addressed Houses of Parliament in England, Scotland, Sweden, Australia, New Zealand, and the European Union.
