Marc Raibert is a globally recognised robotics pioneer and the visionary founder of Boston Dynamics, an organisation that has fundamentally redefined the boundaries of mobility, dexterity, and physical intelligence in machines. Currently serving as the Executive Director of the Boston Dynamics AI Institute, Raibert continues to drive the future of robotic engineering by merging advanced artificial intelligence with state-of-the-art hardware. His proprietary frameworks in dynamic balancing and legged locomotion have revolutionised how robots interact with the physical world, paving the way for autonomous applications across industrial, logistical, and emergency sectors.
Before founding Boston Dynamics in 1992 as a spin-off from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Raibert held highly esteemed academic positions. He served as a Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at MIT and as an Associate Professor of Computer Science and Robotics at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU). It was at CMU that he founded the Leg Laboratory, an internationally renowned research centre that established the foundational scientific principles for highly dynamic, legged robots, which he later transitioned to MIT.
Under his leadership as CEO for over two decades, Boston Dynamics produced some of the world’s most advanced and viral robotic platforms, including BigDog, Atlas, Spot, and Handle. These machines demonstrated unprecedented capabilities in navigating rough terrain, performing agile manoeuvres, and executing complex automated tasks in unpredictable environments. Today, as the head of the newly established AI Institute, a multi-million dollar research initiative backed by Hyundai, Raibert focuses on solving the most critical challenges in robotics: equipping machines with the cognitive awareness, athletic intelligence, and physical adaptability to operate seamlessly and safely alongside humans.
